1.What is Triisopropanolamine(TIPA)?

Triisopropanolamine is an organic compound with the structural formula [CH3CH(OH)CH2]3N. It appears as a white crystalline solid with weak alkalinity and is flammable. Due to the excellent color stability of salts formed by triisopropanolamine and long-chain fatty acids, it is used as an emulsifier in the production of zincate additives, rust inhibitors for ferrous metals, cutting coolants, cement strength enhancers, softening agents for dyeing, gas absorbents, and antioxidants. It also serves as an additive in soaps, detergents, and cosmetics. 2.How it Works?

Triisopropanolamine, as a surfactant, exhibits excellent dispersibility. The branched alkyl chains and the sterically hindered structure of hydroxyl groups in triisopropanolamine endow it with superior dispersibility compared to triethanolamine. This dispersibility significantly enhances cement production efficiency and improves fluidity. Specifically, triisopropanolamine promotes the hydration of less reactive ferrite phases and increases the degree of hydration of cement minerals, thereby improving both early and late-stage strength of cement.

Additionally, triisopropanolamine has a wide range of applications, with a dosage range of 0.001% to 0.2%. As the dosage increases, the strengthening effect gradually improves.

Effects on Cement Performance
Early-Stage Strength Enhancement: Triisopropanolamine achieves early strength by promoting the early hydration of aluminate phases and modifying the initial setting characteristics of cement, whereas triethanolamine primarily enhances early strength by promoting the hydration of less reactive ferrite phases and improving dispersibility.

Late-Stage Strength Enhancement: Triethanolamine mainly contributes to early strength, while triisopropanolamine significantly enhances late-stage strength by promoting the hydration of less reactive minerals and improving cement dispersibility. Foreign studies have shown that late-stage strength can be increased by more than 3 MPa, or even by 5–12 MPa.

Stable Application Performance: The use of triethanolamine is strictly limited by its dosage, as exceeding 0.1% can cause flash setting, adversely affecting the setting characteristics of cement. In contrast, triisopropanolamine has a broader dosage range, from 0.001% to 0.2%, with gradually improving strengthening effects as the dosage increases.

 

3.Benefits and Uses

Surfactant: The salts formed by triisopropanolamine and long-chain fatty acids exhibit excellent color stability, making it suitable for use as an emulsifier.

Cement grinding aid: As a surfactant, triisopropanolamine possesses outstanding dispersibility, improving the fluidity of cement as well as its early and late-stage strength.

Textile auxiliaries: Such as finishing agents, dyeing auxiliaries, and penetrants, triisopropanolamine demonstrates excellent emulsifying, dispersing, wetting, and antistatic properties, enhancing the quality and performance of textiles.

Other applications: It can also be used in the preparation of plasticizers, zincate electroplating additives (for cyanide-free plating processes), rust inhibitors for ferrous metals, cutting coolants, softening agents for dyeing, gas absorbents, and antioxidants, among others.
